Forgotton Sci-Fi

In this episode of 'Forgotten SciFi' we look at the 1980 made for tv mini-series, The Martian Chronicles. Story Line : In the 21st century, Earth begins the colonization of Mars. However, things do not go as planned, at first due to the hostile Martian natives and later because of the self-destructive Earthmen.

The miniseries was originally broadcast on NBC across three nights in January \(1980\), structured into distinct parts:
  • Part 1: The Expeditions - Follows the initial manned missions to a surprisingly habitable, geometric Mars. The astronauts quickly discover that a chickenpox virus brought by
  • by earlier, failed expeditions has decimated the native Martian population.
  • Part 2: The Settlers - Details the rapid colonization of the red planet as thousands of humans arrive to establish a second Earth. However, the progress is abruptly halted by global, nuclear conflict back home.
  • Part 3: The Martians - Centers on Colonel Wilder and a small group of survivors who find themselves completely isolated on Mars following the destruction of Earth. They must decide whether to return to Earth or establish a new home on the red planet.
  • Directed by Michael Anderson (Logan's Run) and adapted by legendary sci-fi writer Richard Matheson, the miniseries leans heavily into the cold-war anxieties, retro-futurism, and allegorical tone of Bradbury's original text.  Because the narrative focuses more on character introspection and philosophical themes rather than action-packed space battles. While praised for its artistic sets, geometric Martian architecture, some reviewers note that the visual effects are dated and the later episodes feature a stark drop in budget.
