UFO

Gerry Anderson’s tv series UFO from 1970 is a British science fiction television series about the ongoing covert efforts of a government defense organisation to prevent an alien invasion of Earth.

The series’ premise is that in 1980 , Earth is being visited by aliens from a dying planet, who are abducting humans and harvesting their organs for their own bodies. The alien incursions may also be a prelude to a possible full-scale invasion. The series’ main cast of characters are the staff of a secret, high-technology international military agency called SHADO (an acronym for Supreme Headquarters, Alien Defence Organisation) established to defend Earth and humanity against the mysterious aliens and learn more about them, while at the same time keeping the threat of an alien invasion hidden from the public.

UFO featured key motifs and plot elements that shared a conceptual continuity with nearly all of Anderson’s previous TV work. Every series from Supercar on wards focused on the heroic exploits of a secret but benevolent group or agency (the Supercar team, World Space Patrol, WASP, International Rescue, Spectrum, WIN, BISHOP and SHADO), operating from a remote or hidden base, and equipped with futuristic technology and/or advanced transport vehicles, whose mission is to protect the people of Earth from danger and disaster, and counter the nefarious schemes of a sinister, devious and elusive enemy (Masterspy, the Subterrains, the Aquaphibians, The Hood, The Mysterons, the aliens).

The sixties and seventies were great fun in the sci-fi tv world, through them came so many great classics like this one. Anderson would later go on to create one of the greatest cult classics of the day, Space 1999.

UFO, A facebook group dedicated to all fans of this old sci-fi TV-series, and somehow wish that they’d make it again, keeping its spirit alive. To fans who think this was the best TV show ever basically. Unsure how many members it has but it does keep the fans connected with one another.

S.H.A.D.O. A facebook group for serious fans of Gerry Anderson’s live action series ‘UFO’. This group has over 5700 members and anywhere from three to ten posts per day. This one has been around almost eight years on fb.
